| Armand Young, who also goes by BAMBOOTHEWALK, surprised members when he visited the Minquas Fire Company No. 2 this evening as truck and equipment checks were just getting started prior to the fire house's weekly work night. Young started walking on April 17th, 2007 from California with his destination of ground zero in New York City. He walks for those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Along the way Young has swept the newspapers and media across the country as he helps the homeless for every life lost on 9/11 and the lives of soldiers lost. Some members heard about Young, his journey, and his "acts of human kindness" from members of the Coatesville Fire Department. Just yesterday Young was located in Coatesville, Pennsylvania where he spent the night at The Washington Hose Co. Today the members of Minquas were fortunate to spend about 1 hour with Young before he continued on his his way. Follow Young's journey and check out his "act's of human kindness":
Young travels with a daypack and a staff decorated with mantle pieces, various fire service memorabilia, and flags with signatures of firefighters he has collected on his trek across the country. Underneath the decor is a bamboo stalk that Young cut down from his front yard in Santa Monica, Calif. Young asked members to add their signatures to the stripes of flags; in return for a good deed performed in 24 hours. To date Young has obtained over 250,000 signatures and counting. Young doesn't normally set goals for how far he walk's each day but he said, "I would like to reach ground zero by September 11th." With many miles ahead Young set off on foot towards West Whiteland Fire Co. Young welcomes anyone to walk a mile with him and in that mile help someone, his cell phone number is 641-351-1082. |
